Income in Rhode Island

Median means middle, so half of all households or families earn less than the median income and half earn more.  Median income is considered a better gauge of what the “typical” family earns than is the average income, because averages are distorted by the very high earnings of a few families.  The Census Bureau reports median incomes for different demographic groups.
